Current Exhibit: Koffee with Kafka

Veteran Art Studio

About Veteran Art Studio

I filmed this on the floor of our empty London flat at midnight, so excuse the awkward posture! Join me, M.B. Dallocchio, Iraq War veteran, social worker, and artist, as I share my insights on how creative techniques - from visual art to memoir writing - can be used for stress-reduction, relaxation, and boosting your creativity. Whether you’re a veteran with zero experience in art or writing or someone working with veterans, this special edition vlog series is for you.

6 Reasons to Keep a Sketchbook

Sketchbooks are extremely beneficial to building your skills as an artist regardless of your current skill level. And more importantly for this vlog series, you should consider keeping one.

Here are 6 reasons why you should keep a sketchbook in addition to 3 page ideas on how to start one out.

Pencil & Eraser Shading

A helpful trick in sketching that'll come in handy in just about every pencil-related lesson going forward!

How to Pixelate Your Art

Pixelating your sketches can be both time-consuming and intense, but it’s a great way to improve your shading skills and examine your work from a completely different perspective.

Pixelated Lion Hyperlapse Drawing

This is part of an upcoming lesson in Veteran Art Studio where I share how to pixelate drawings in pencil. It's time-consuming as hell, but the results are worth it! Pardon the injured wrist and brace as well. It took a while to reproduce this piece because drawing is still super painful 🤕

Expressive Writing | How to get started

Talk therapy seems to be a default go-to for processing trauma but it’s not the only way. There are so many tools and therapies out there that can help us along our journey in processing trauma, but one of the biggest challenges is figuring what exactly works best for you.

After asking on Facebook and LinkedIn what my next episode of Veteran Art Studio should focus on – writing was the most popular response. Mind you, I was thinking an anatomy or portrait drawing instruction video was going to win out, but I’m glad writing won out.

Aztec Calendar #inktober

A bit of #FBF nostalgia where I took a gold gel pen to black poster board from my local grocery store and made this. I had to make to make art for Spanish class in high school focusing on any country in Latin America or Spain. So, I did this 😎

VAS Field Trip: London Street Art

When I'm feeling a lull in inspiration, I go out and see more art. Get to know the artists. Figure out why certain pieces speak to me more than others.

In this virtual field trip, I take you through hours of wandering London's Shoreditch neighborhood, which is home to world-famous street art - and you'll see why. This is about 3 hours of strolling compiled in about 5 minutes.

Portrait Sketch Demo: Tom Ellis

A quick sketch of Tom Ellis and enjoying an espresso after completion. Or is it Espresso with Ellis? Cafe con Lucifer? You decide.

Portrait Sketch Demo: Lesley-Ann Brandt

A quick look at the demo from the upcoming Portrait Drawing Basics episode of Veteran Art Studio. Who else better than Mazikeen, right?

Portrait Drawing Basics

To start out drawing portraits, one must get used to having a general idea where facial features go and proportions. While you don’t have to do all of this right now as you watch, I wanted to show how there is a step-by-step process to drawing portraits to demystify it and make it a lot more accessible for practice.

Writing Down Trauma | Transforming Trauma Into Inspiration

Whether you’re just getting started out in your own writing journey or an experienced writer, the resource I’m going to share with you in today’s lesson proved to be an invaluable one in my own experience in writing down traumatic events.

In short, you don’t need an MFA in Creative Writing. You just need to show up and start writing.

Stay tuned for bloops in the end!

Draw Your Morning Routine

Whether you’re a novice or an experienced artist, drawing your morning cup of coffee or however you start your day is an easy-to-do exercise where you can put your own personal spin and maybe even break through artist’s block.

Mixed Media Sketchbooks

Mixed Media Sketchbooks seemed to just happen naturally for me as someone who has always been on-the-go, so I’ll also share a few examples of how that’s evolved over time. Mixed Media Sketchbooks are like portable studios where you’re free to experiment and being ready whenever inspiration strikes.
