July 29, 2016 -  2016 Soros Justice Fellowship Conference
Workshop Title: Decolonizing the Prison and Military Industrial Complex: A Client-Centered Approach
Presenters: MB Dallocchio, Guy Terrill Gambill
Summary Description: This workshop offers an overview of the ways that incorporate intersectionality into their legal or social work framework and keeping systems mapping in the forefront of case management. This workshop would provide a dual examination of both the Defense and Prison Industrial Complex and their relationships to low-income individuals of color, especially colonized peoples. We will analyze how discrimination due to racial identity and low socioeconomic status (SES) are linked to both military enlistment and criminal justice interaction. Using Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a framework, this workshop would provide an examination of how socioeconomic disadvantages, polytrauma, and institutionalized discrimination affect justice system and mental health outcomes. Underrepresented racial and/or ethnic minority (URM) experiences will be explored as they navigate their pre- and post-incarceration journey. The negative consequences of being “underrepresented” in the community and experiencing ongoing colonialism will be discussed in addition to nuances in exclusion and conflict, the ambiguous nature of these experiences, and complex polytrauma.
